Our People

Different hands. One vineyard.

Q Wine has always been shaped by the people who know this place well. From vineyard to cellar and everything that happens beyond it, each brings a different perspective to the same six hectares.

Jules Stephan

Founder

Jules Stephan

Jules Stephan is the owner of Q Wine, though he is more often found behind the scenes than in front of a camera. Analytical by nature and commercially astute, he is quietly proud of the family wine history woven into the label. He enjoys the alchemy of turning an idea into something tangible, balancing instinct with numbers, and an enduring fascination with the science of wine. Ask him what he loves most, and the answer is disarmingly simple: putting his name to something made with thought, then sharing it with people he cares about.

Jules Matthews

General Manager

Jules Matthews

Jules Matthews is at the centre of the many moving parts of Q Wine. From export and logistics to packaging and design, she has a hand in almost every detail that takes Q from vineyard to customer. With a background in finance and a love of travel, food and wine, she brings a mix of commercial thinking, creativity and an eye for detail to the business. She is constantly balancing the big picture with the details, building relationships and making sure everything comes together beautifully. When she is not making Q tick, she can usually be found upside down on a yoga mat.

Antony Worch

Chief Winemaker

Antony Worch

Antony Worch has made the wines at Q since 2012. Raised in Alsace, France, he trained in viticulture and winemaking in Montpellier before working across Alsace, the Languedoc and South Africa, and eventually making New Zealand home. Meticulous and quietly exacting, Antony is deeply attuned to the land and the character of each vintage. His approach is hands-on where it matters and minimal in intervention where it doesn’t. The aim is always the same: purity, precision and wines that speak clearly of the Waitaki Valley.

Timbo Deaker

Viticulturist

Timbo Deaker

Timbo Deaker has been part of the New Zealand wine industry since 1992 and has been with Q Wine since its inception. His approach is grounded in sustainable farming, with a nod to biodynamic principles and a deep respect for the natural rhythms of the land. He works closely with the vineyard as each season unfolds, with an unwavering focus on vine health and the long-term wellbeing of the site. It is thoughtful, patient work, and the kind that rewards looking well beyond a single vintage.
